Marriage Gym
why a gym and not a school?
You can relax, we are not talking about a literal gym.
No hiit workouts or sweaty cardio, no burning bulgarian split squats or burpees here. you’ll be in comfortable chairs around a dining room table.
But this is a training program, a routine- because building emotional and relational strength and flexibility requires our attention and practice. New systems have the power to create new habits, new ways of being with one another. our pitch is simple: if we can set aside 90 minutes a week to address our physical flab, why in the world would we not prioritize 90 minutes a week to develop the thing that most shapes our life- our marriage?
If we named this the Marriage School one might be inclined to believe that the primary thing holding back marriages is a lack of knowledge.
But never before have people lived in such an information saturated age. and a whole lot of the new scientific information coming our way suggests that information alone is not enough.
We are emotional beings with a touch of rationality, and to grow in the direction we rationally desire requires hacking deeper parts of ourselves and creating new neural patterns. it requires training in the presence of others!
Why cohorts?
so much of what we need in life is to see that we are not alone. not alone in our struggles and our pain. and yet we now live in what the former surgeon general called a loneliness epidemic. This puts additional strain on our marriages because we increasing look to our spouse not only as our romantic lover, emotional confidant, and co-household manager, but to fulfill the vacuum of a plurality of friendships and social connections that have evaporated.
meeting in cohorts with other couples offers you the rare opportunity to see the warts of others that social media tends to mask. It provides a much needed space to not only be vulnerable, but to be strengthened in your vulnerability by the power of grace. These cohorts are designed to be a safe space but also a brave space. A place to grow. even for those of us who identify as introverts and often feel like we want nothing more than to cuddle under a blanket and binge watch a series- deep down we know we crave love from others. don’t be a cynic. take action. invest in your relational well being by joining a cohort today!
